Year THREE Recap!
Incredibly, it’s (only? already?) been three years since we opened AHWA. So much happened this year! Here’s 2015, in a nutshell.
Huge changes this year! Back in February, we packed up our apartment and animals — plus our newly purchased Vandercook SP-15 letterpress — into a U-Haul, hooked up the Family Truckster to the back, and hit the road with our sights set on our nation’s 15th largest city, Columbus, Ohio. After driving through the night during a zero-visibility blizzard in central PA, we made it to our destination in one piece (barely).
So far, we absolutely love our new city. Being the state’s capital and revolving around THE Ohio State University, there’s no shortage of culture, music, good food, and loads of good beer. Our new neighborhood is very walkable and has all the amenities we grew accustomed to in Brooklyn, but just on a smaller scale (less man-buns too).
We’ve continued to work with a strong list of New York clients, both old and new, and have been back East five times this year for personal, professional, and surf-related matters. Fun Fact about Ohio: it borders exactly zero oceans. The more you know!™
It’s still super exciting to say we have our very own studio and print shop, right off the back of our house. The space alone is a huge upgrade — going from our 630 sq. ft. apartment to enough room for the aforementioned SP-15 letterpress, a tabletop C&P Pilot press, industrial paper cutters, a production table, and our two long desks. After serving as a paper scrap vacuum, we can let Martha straight out to the backyard to do dog things. It’s pretty amazing to work here, especially after years of working out of our teeny Brooklyn apartment. We have room to spread out and immerse ourselves in lettering, printing, and painting projects. At the end of the day, we can just shut the gate and actually leave for the night, even though John often still feels the need to yell “Meghan, when are you going to leave office!?” from another room.
We’ve been lucky to do some exciting work this year. We continued to work on custom weddings & photo shoots (Kurt & Kyle,Emily & David, Brittney & Scott, Lauren & Ben), got some corporate event gigs (Google, YouTube), and were tasked to develop the lettering for a print campaign for a small local company, Wendy’s. And we’re currently working on some really fun and challenging projects that won’t be ready for several more months.
Now that we have a functioning print studio, we have been making more and more of our own print work for wholesale and retail. It’s been very rewarding (and challenging) to develop our own voice and be our own clients for once (we’re totally the worst clients ever). The past year, we’ve participated in several flea markets and art shows and plan on attending/showing even more in 2016. And after getting products into some local retail spaces, we plan on pushing our wholesale line even harder in the coming year, with our ultimate goal of boothing-it-up at the National Stationery Show starting in 2017.
We continued to garner press this year, including TWO features in GLAMOUR. Here’s the Press Roll for 2015:
Once again, a HUGE thanks to anyone who supported us financially, social media-ly, and/or emotionally this year by hiring us, buying our stuff, or visiting the studio. Cheers to an awesome and even better 2016!
