Sign Painting and Digital Lettering Workshops

Earlier this month I went back to NYC for the first-ever Typographics conference, and I took two lettering workshops at the Cooper Union while I was there.

 Letter Puzzles with Alex Trochut

Alex Trochut creates amazing and surreal lettering and illustration for a variety of great clients. His workshop was great for me because I don’t often get to take my flat lettering and bring it into a 3D space. He showed us how to create “liquid” letters and then let us create another piece of lettering of our own choosing. I created this “neon” lettering piece, which I am pretty happy with. I wanted to explore the way that neon signs are made from one tube that comes forward and recedes through space.

Sign Painting with John Downer:

I got to spend a whole week learning and practicing sign painting with John Downer, who has been painting signs for 40 years and who you might know as the creator of typefaces like Brothers.

We started with the basics, mainly just learning to control our brushes and paint consistency (and let me tell you, as comfortable as I am with a brush pen, those brushes and paint take a lot of practice to get right). We practiced the classic casual and block lettering styles, and got to do a little script at the end.

I can’t wait to put some of these new skills into use!
